Ready to get started? make sure to follow these steps

In order to get started with the lessons, you need to prepare your Chromebook so that it can interact with the Arduino board.  All you will need is the Johnny-Five Google App installed.  This app will allow you to write JavaScript programs that will send all the commands to the Arduino board using the USB port.

A known issue with some Chromebooks

Some Chromebooks will not work with the installed Firmata (See step 11).  You may have to install the Arduino Firmata sketch on your Arduino board using a PC or a Mac computer instead.  Replace Step 11 below with the steps for your PC or for your Mac.

Let's get started

1. Log in

 In order to use your Chromebook you need a Google account and log into it.  Use your gmail account and password.

2. App Launcher

 You can add native apps on your Chromebooks.  Click on the App Launcher to start it and look for Johnny-Five.

3. Search

 In the search bar, look for the Johnny-Five app.

4. Find Johnny-Five

5. Add Johnny-Five

 Click Add App to install it.

 The app should be downloading.

7. All Apps

 Click the "All Apps" icon

 Your Arduino board should be shown in the device list.

13. Your Log

 At the bottom of the application you will find the log.  It will list everything that happens, including any error messages in red.  Pay attention to these as they contain messages about the error and what you need to fix.  It will also contain the output of your "console.log()" commands.

Getting some Timeout Errors?

Some older Chromebooks models are not able to install the Firmata software on the Arduino correctly, thus making the JavaScript sketch not working.  You may receive an error message saying that there was a timeout trying to connect to the Arduino board.  Unfortunately, we have not found a workaround for these cases without using a PC or Mac for the install.  Should you run into this issue, follow the steps outlined in PodPi Volume 0 (Page 9) on how to download the Arduino IDE and upload the Firmata sketch on your Arduino board.  This step will only be required once and your Arduino boards will be ready to work with your Chromebooks.
